Transforming Personal Grief - talk

Dr Lyn Prashant

by Lisette Clemens

The creator of a unique and lauded approach to grief counseling will give a presentation on the topic at the Biblioteca’s Sala Quetzal on January 16.

Dr Lyn Prashant, FT, IGT, and a somatic thanatologist (death, dying, bereavement specialist), trains healthcare professionals, hospice workers, mental health practitioners, as well as consulting internationally in Mexico, the US, and South Africa. She works with loss and trauma of any kind. Her training in bereavement counseling and knowledge of somatic health care practices led her to develop a unique and successful approach to grief counseling called Degriefing. Unlike many existing approaches, Degriefing employs both verbal and physical methodologies to relieve an individual’s emotional distress, mental anguish, and physical discomfort.

Presentation topics will include:

Normalizing the multifaceted impact of bereavement

Identifying types of losses

Language and loss

Tools for transforming loss

“Somatic quick tips” for grief relief

Prashant, a fellow in thanatology, lives in San Miguel de Allende, counseling bereaved individuals and their families. She is a member of the Association of Death Education and Counseling (ADEC) and has worked for over three decades, teaching clients to use integrative therapies to transform somatic (physical) grief and promote mind-body-spirit integration.

Prashant hosts individual, private grief retreats year-round and offers international phone counseling, stating that “grief is the most available untapped emotional resource for personal transformation.” She is a captivating and engaging speaker who has given keynote speeches at the Mayo Clinic, Cape Town’s Holocaust Museum, UC Berkeley, the University of Arizona, and San Jose Behavioral Sciences. Respected researchers in death, dying, and grieving Stephen and Ondrea Levine and Elisabeth Kubler-Ross all endorse Degriefing.

In 2019, Dr Prashant will be offering the following workshops in San Miguel:

Jan. 26–27, 11am–5pm. Two-Day Seminar: “Mindfulness and Transforming Loss” Coteacher Jeanie Seward-Magee, Dharma teacher in the tradition of Thich Nhat Hanh. (Two scholarships)

July 1–6, 2019, 40 Hours Degriefing Professional Certification Training.
