The San Miguel de Allende Jewish Community Commemorates International Holocaust Remembrance Day at Bellas Artes

"It would be a dangerous error to think of the Holocaust as simply the result of the insanity of a group of criminal Nazis. On the contrary, the Holocaust was the culmination of millennia of hatred, scapegoating and discrimination targeting the Jews, what we now call anti-Semitism".

UN Secretary-General António Guterres
The Holocaust was a turning point in history, one which has taught the world to say "never again." In 2006 the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution (A/RES/60/7) by consensus condemning "without reserve" all manifestations of religious intolerance, as well as incitement of violence, or harassment or violence against persons or communities based on ethnic origin or religious belief, whenever they occur.

The resolution further declared that the United Nations would designate 27 January -- the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz death camp -- as an International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust, and urged Member States to develop educational programs to instill the memory of the tragedy in future generations to prevent genocide from occurring again. The resolution calls for a remembrance of past crimes with an eye towards preventing them in the future.

To this effect, the Jewish Cultural Community Center of SMA (CHESMA) has prepared a short, but significant program to commemorate this day at Bellas Artes. George Kalmar, CHESMA President shared that renowned scholar Marcos Moloeznik, Ph.D. has been invited to host this important event. "We will light candles to honor the six million Jews who perished during the Holocaust." Dr. Moloeznik is a full time Profesor-Researcher in the Political Sciences Department at the Center of Social Sciences and Humanities of the University of Guadalajara (Mexico).

A lecture will be held on Wednesday January 17, 2018 at 19:00 and will include the screening of episode of the world-famous BBC documentary called "Auschwitz: the Nazis & the Final Solution." The event's theme, "Holocaust Remembrance and Education: Our Shared Responsibility," emphasizes the universal dimension of the Holocaust and underscores that education about this tragedy should encourage humankind to firmly reject all forms of racism, violence, and anti-Semitism.

Everyone is welcome. This is a non-religious event.
