Service over Self, Rotary

For 60 years, Club Rotario of San Miguel de Allende’s have used their passion, energy, and intelligence to take action on sustainable projects. From literacy to peace to water and health, Club Rotario works to better our community. The Rotary motto, Service above Self, clearly defines this local and worldwide organization.

Rotarian service began in 1905. It was called “Rotary”, because the meetings wold rotate between member´s offices. Ten years later, the Rotary Foundation and Rotary International were divided for more efficiency.

In Mexico, the first Rotary Club (Club Rotario Ciudad de Mexico) was founded in 1921. The Second Rotary club was “Club Rotario de Tampico” in 1922. The First Mexican president of Rotary International came in 1928.

Club Rotary San Miguel de Allende was chartered in 1958, 24 San Miguel businessmen came together and named Salvador de Lara Martinez as the first Club president. In 2006, Club Rotario then sponsored Rotary San Miguel de Allende Midday, (one of only 2 English speaking Clubs in Mexico) and in 2015, a Young Rotarian club (Rotaract San Miguel).

In August 2018, Club Rotario San Miguel Allende will commemorate 60 years working in Rotary International’s five Areas of Focus: Promoting peace, Fighting diseases, Providing clean water, Saving mothers and children, Supporting education, and growing local economies.

In 1987, Rotary began accepting women as members.. In 2018, Club Rotario is proud to have an even split of men and women members. And, as women achieve greater leadership roles in all aspects of life around the world, Club Rotario will have all-female Committee Chairs for 2 years and a female president in 2019-2020. The Midday Rotary club has also seen it’s female membership increase as well.

Join the Midday Rotary Club of San Miguel de Allende for a historical look at Rotary. Club Rotaio’s incoming president, Carlos Olivares, will review their accomplishments of the past and hopes for the future. Olivares was raised in both Mexico and Chile, and studied Economics and management in USA. Oliveras served SMA as executive director of Feed the Hungry San Miguel and currently is an advisor for several NGO´s.

Rotary is for women and men who want to give back to their communities. Both local Clubs are accepting new membership applications. Please join us on Tuesday, June 19th at 12:00 PM at the Hotel Mission on Salida a Queretaro. Parking is free and the hotel is easily accessible by bus.
