at Galeria Casa Diana with photographer Reenie Barrow
The Secret Life of Flowers is the name of the new art exhibition at Galeria Casa Diana dedicated to the photography and artistry of Reenie Barrow. The exhibition will showcase recent works by the Rhode Island artist, specifically her study of Calla Lilies. You are warmly invited to the opening reception on Wednesday, February 13, 2019 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Recreo #48, Centro. The photographer will also be present at the cocktail.

Reenie Barrow invites the viewer to enter a world of imagination and contemplation in her series of elegant black and white portraits of Calla Lilies. While on a trip to Mexico several years ago, the photographer became intrigued by this flower which so prominently features in the country’s art. Soon, she was compelled to fill every vase in her house these lilies. “Sometimes they stood at attention, sometimes they drooped and hung their heads, and sometimes they leaned on each other for support. It seemed that they told stories”, she explains. Until that time, flowers had never been her subject to photograph, and it became her challenge to tell their tales through her lens. “I find I can most effectively allow each group of flowers to tell its story by using a simple background and relying on the balance, symmetry, and interaction between the flowers.”

Reenie Barrow’s photographs represent her long-standing interest in documenting the details of daily life around the world. In her own words: “the thread that binds my work is a straightforward presentation with the ultimate goal of making photographs both visually compelling and catalysts for contemplation.”

Her career has taken her to a variety of countries, most notably Vietnam, Greece, Sweden, France, Mexico, Cuba, Spain and several Caribbean islands. Her photographs have been included in Gardner’s Art Through the Ages, Architectural Digest, and Country Living. Among the noteworthy honors Barrow has received is a 1990 award from the Greek government recognizing exceptional contributions of Hellenic culture, and an individual artist’s grant from the Connecticut Commission on the Arts. A graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, Barrow is a self-taught photographer, born in Los Angeles who now resides in Bristol, Rhode Island.

In the past forty years, Barrow has displayed her work in more than a hundred american and international exhibits, including shows at the Association of International Photography Dealers, New York, Art Institute of Chicago, the International Center of Photography in New York City, the Cuban Center for Photography, Havana, Cuba, and the Zappion National Gallery in Athens, Greece. In addition, numerous private and corporate collections (among them Reader’s Digest, IBM, Fidelity Investments, Connecticut Bank and Trust and the Art Institute of Chicago) permanently house Barrow’s photographs.

The images on display were all made in San Miguel de Allende over a period of a few years beginning in 2014.

“La vida secreta de las flores” con la fotógrafa Reenie Barrow
“La vida secreta de las flores” es el nombre de la nueva exposición de arte que montará Galería Casa Diana dedicada a la fotografía de Reenie Barrow. La muestra presenta obra reciente de lirios de flor blanca y se inaugurará con un coctel el próximo miércoles 13 de Febrero 2019 de 6.00 a 8.00 pm en Recreo # 48, San Miguel de Allende, Centro. La fotógrafa, proveniente de Rhode Island, estará presente en el evento.
A través de su serie de retratos en blanco y negro de lirios, Reenie Barrow nos invita a entrar en un mundo de imaginación y contemplación. Durante un viaje a México varios años atrás, la fotógrafa descubrió el lirio de flor blanca y quedo deslumbrada ante la elegancia y belleza de esta flor que tanto destaca en el arte folklórico mexicano. Pronto, Reenie llenaría cada florero en su casa con estos lirios. “Parecía que me contaban cuentos”, explica la artista. “Algunas veces se acomodaban rectas y alertas, otras se inclinaban y colgaban su cabeza, también a ratos se apoyaban una sobre la otra buscando soporte.” Nunca antes las flores habían sido tema de fotografía para Reenie, pero los lirios se convirtieron en un desafío y ella decidió contar sus relatos a través de su lente. “Para permitir a cada grupo de flores contar su propia historia, lo mejor es utilizar un fondo muy sencillo y confiar en el equilibrio, la simetría y la interacción de las flores".

Las fotografías de Reenie Barrow siempre han demostrado su gran interés por documentar a detalle la vida cotidiana en todo el mundo. Su carrera la ha llevado a Vietnam, Grecia, Suecia, Francia, México, Cuba, España y varias islas del Caribe. Ella explica que “el hilo que une mi trabajo es crear una representación directa de la vida con fotografías que sean visualmente atractivas y que lleven al publico a la contemplación".

Sus fotografías han incluidas en las revistas de Gardner’s Art Through the Ages, Architectural Digest, y Country Living. Entre los premios y menciones honorificas que Barrow ha recibido, destaca un premio de 1990 del gobierno griego agradeciendo las contribuciones excepcionales de la cultura helénica, así mismo una beca de la Comisión de Artes de Connecticut. Reenie se graduó de la Universidad de California en Berkeley, Barrow es una fotógrafa autodidacta, nacida en Los Ángeles que ahora reside en Bristol, Rhode Island.

En los últimos cuarenta años, Barrow ha mostrado su trabajo en más de cien exhibiciones estadounidenses e internacionales, que incluyen exhibiciones en la Asociación de Comerciantes Internacionales de Fotografía, Nueva York, el Instituto de Arte de Chicago, el Centro Internacional de Fotografía en la ciudad de Nueva York, el Centro Cubano de Fotografía en La Habana y la Galería Nacional Zappion en Atenas.
