El Javi: The King of Rock Flamenco - concert

For the first time, all the way from Denver, Colorado, The King of Rock Flamenco, “El Javi” is giving an extraordinary concert at Bellas Artes on Friday, November 9 at 7:00 pm. Accompanied by his loyal percussionist Jordi Marín and Mario Gonzalez on the bass. Now, armed with a more mature and expressive artistic palate, he is touring North America with his latest production, Gypsy Journey Trilogy part 2, “El Refugio”.

From the first note to the percussive slap and strum, El Javi’s guitar compositions evoke images of Spanish countryside and the plaintive Moorish narratives of flamenco music. Melodic lead lines suspend themselves upon a canopy of bittersweet chord progressions, taking turns with staccato arpeggios and the irresistible rhythms of the signature flamenco strum, the rasqueado. And, while what Gutierrez does best is to follow the musical curves and turns of his gypsy muse, he does so with all the authenticity of an ageless soul in a modern time. Hailing from Mexico City, with a background in electric rock, jazz and blues, his primary influences are much more contemporary and newer world than the classical roots of Spanish guitar, yet El Javi effortlessly transplants moods, modes and motifs into a sonic panorama of cultures and continents.

El Javi picked up the guitar at the age of twelve, went on to study at the Fermatta Musical Academy in Mexico City, and voyaged to Los Angeles at the cusp of the millenium to continue studying at Musicians Institute. While there, he immersed himself in the LA band scene and spent several years playing out and teaching guitar by day. Along the way, boredom- or something close to artistic malaise- overcame him, rediscovering his classical guitar and a thirst for a more authentic, original expression than ever before. Launching himself headlong into the world of composition, he travelled to Seville, Spain in the summer of 2005 to study flamenco guitar at Taller Flamenco.

El Javi, out of Mexico City, joins the spirit of flamenco with the heart of rock producing the unparalleled experience of Rock Flamenco. Through his distinct sound, he paints an auditory portrait composed of strength and intimacy, reflecting his experiential existence as both human and artist. Collaborations color his compositions as he endlessly evolves his music, warranting his title. The King of Rock Flamenco.

Highlights of his career include Festival of the Arts in Coahuila Mexico, The Jazz and Blues festival in Santa Clarita, CA, the Denver International Festival, The International Music Festival in San Jose del Cabo, Mex, the Salmon Arm Festival in British Columbia, Canada. and opened for today’s biggest voice of flamenco, Diego el Cigala, during his Noche Tucumana world tour in San Miguel de Allende, Mex.
