Birds Fly In, concert/opening - mixed

Michigan artist Ellie Harold and local musician David Mendoza will give a live art/music performance introducing Birds Fly In: A Human Refuge Project at Casa de la Noche, Organos #19, on Tuesday, April 16, at 5:30 p.m.

This is a celebratory event, commemorating both the informal release of Mendoza's new CD, and traveling artist Harold's project, Birds Fly In. Ellie will be painting live to the accompaniment of David's original music, which he will perform on violin, piano, and drums.

Birds Fly In: A Human Refuge Project was first born as a response to the suffering of dismayed Americans; and, once Ellie saw images of children in detention cages at the U.S./Mexico border, the project seemed more urgent. Also an ordained Unity minister, Ellie believes that migration is natural in birds and humans. "I decided to create a space to honor the intuitive impulse transcend limited patterns and beliefs," she says.

When Ellie began to consider a soundtrack to accompany her Birds Fly In art display, she thought of David. "His music reminded me of the soulful song of a bird," she says. She was thrilled to learn that David not only played several instruments, but also composed. In mid-November 2018, Mendoza accepted a commission from her to create a full-length album.

While she has now painted many hours to his original compositions, the April 16 event will mark the first time that Ellie will paint live as David performs his music in a concert. The evening introducing Birds Fly In will feature music from David's upcoming album as well as a short video by Fer Mos. The event includes complimentary beverages and botanas, the presale of David's CD, and a drawing for an original small framed painting.

Tickets are 400 pesos, on sale now; capacity is limited. Tickets may be purchased at Casa de la Noche and Boleto City, the ticket kiosk on the second floor of the Mercado Sano, Ancha de San Antonio 123. Boleto City is open Monday through Saturday, 11am to 5pm.
